Third Borei-class nuclear sub handed over to Russian Navy

The third Borei-class (Project 955 ) ballistic missile nuclear submarine, the Vladimir Monomakh, has been handed over to the Russian Navy, a defense industry source told TASS Wednesday.

A notice of acceptance has been signed at the Sevmash shipyard by a state commission, the source said.

It was earlier reported that the submarine will be officially adopted for service in the Russian Navy on December 19. Only when the Russian Navy Ensign is raised over the vessel will it officially become part of the Navy.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Navy is checking deployment conditions of the submarine forces in Vilyuchinsk (Kamchatka), where in the future there will be based advanced submarines of the Project 9-55 “Borei”, representative of the Press and Information service of the Russian Ministry of Defense for the Navy captain First Rank Igor Dygalo told reporters on Monday.

It is planned that the second and third submarines of the “Borei” project, “Alexander Nevsky” and “Vladimir Monomakh” will be the first to enter the Pacific Fleet. The “Alexander Nevsky” has already been included in the Navy, the “Vladimir Monomakh” submarine is completing the state tests. The head boat of the project, “Yury Dolgoruky”, entered into service of the Northern Fleet.
