Russia May Move Sea Launch Project to Brazil

Experts are studying the possibility of moving space rocket launches under the Sea Launch project to Brazil. This statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

“The interesting dialogue is currently in progress at the level of experts. The idea may take shape within the BRICS group, or in our bilateral relations with Brazil, to carry out such joint launches and furnish assistance to Brazil in developing its space industry and making its own spacecraft,” Mr. Rogozin said.

“The first signal calibration network for our GLONASS navigation system is already in place there. We may establish a long-term friendship with Brazil in the sphere of high technologies,” Mr. Rogozin stated, noting that the Sea Launch floating pad had been designed and built specifically for the Zenit rocket, a joint product of Russia and Ukraine.

“Now, after the latest events in Ukraine, one may forget about industrial production in Ukraine, let alone high-tech manufacturing. As a result, the project has been suspended,” Mr. Rogozin explained.

He said the Russian ship would be better than the Mistral because it would be ice-strengthened and would be capable of operations in Arctic seas.

“I don’t think the renunciation (of supplies of the Mistrals) is highly beneficial for the French President and will cause a big crisis at the shipyard that is building these ships,” Rogozin said. “Also, the French will have to pay a penalty as all these things are mentioned in the contract.

“When we were placing the orders for these ships we didn’t have a technology of large-size assembly then but now we have gotten it,” Rogozin said.

By handing over an aircraft carrier to India last year “we demonstrated the ability to build such ships, all the more so that now we have shipyards with dry docks in Crimea and they presuppose ability to build ships of this class, he said.

Russian Military Technologies

May 20 – The joint design of a long-haul wide-body aircraft and the production of Mil Mi-26 heavy helicopters in China will be the top priority military-technological cooperation areas discussed during the Chinese visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin, newspaper Kommersant said on Monday.
The newspaper quoted sources in the Russian delegation and said Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) had drawn up a sketch project and a feasibility study of the prospective long-haul wide-body jet.
“This project is supposed to be a rival for U.S. and European aircraft, and China is interested in building at least 1,000 jets. If the project is successful we may set up a joint venture at some point to compete full-scale against Airbus and Boeing. We are prepared to buy these aircraft for domestic needs, as well,” a source told Kommersant.
The second project will yield a heavy helicopter for Chinese military and civilian structures.
“We offered them to buy Mil Mi-26 helicopters but our partners declined that option. They wished to design a helicopter capable of transporting up to 15 tonnes of cargo, so we suggested a concept of profound modernization of the Mi-26 and expressed readiness to start from scratch and to provide exclusive customization,” the source continued.
According to the newspaper, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and Russian Helicopters head Alexander Mikheyev are going to China today to discuss the issue before a meeting of the two chiefs of state.
“We are ready to transfer some technologies within the framework of joint ventures, because prototypes will be built on parity terms and under our control,” the source told Kommersant.
A source close to the Federal Service for Military-Technological Cooperation told the newspaper Beijing procured more than $1.8 billion worth of Russian armaments and military hardware in 2013 and ranked fourth amongst buyers of Russian military products.
