Opposition leader says liberation of Aleppo puts off Syria’s collapse

MOSCOW, December 16. /TASS/. The liberation of Aleppo, with civilians and militants leaving the city, has put off the possible collapse of Syria, Qadri Jamil, one of the leaders of the Syrian Popular Front for Change, said at a press conference on Friday.

“Those who planned the collapse of Syria are now thinking of other ways to achieve their goal,” Jamil noted.

“Everything possible needs to be done to prevent the collapse of Syria,” the opposition leader stressed. “The consequences would be disastrous for Syria as well as the entire region.”

“This is why the events taking place in Aleppo are very important from a political and a military point of view,” Jamil added.

Syrian opposition groups are holding consultations over the possibility of creating a common delegation for Geneva talks with the Syrian government, he said.

“The idea the Geneva talks should be conducted by the representatives of the regime and three opposition groups has outlived itself,” Jamil said. “There must be two delegations: one from the government and the other from the opposition. We want to have one delegation from the opposition. We were the first to have called for this.”

Jamil said “consultations were underway among various opposition groups (on that issue).”

“I believe that we shall see the results of these talks soon,” he said.

Jamil remarked that despite disagreements with the external opposition the opposition inside the country did not wish to have anyone barred from the talks.

“We will be adamant all should have a chance to participate,” he confirmed. “There are those who do not wish a political settlement, but I believe that everybody is responsible for what is going on in the country.

“There must be one, truly patriotic opposition,” he said.
